Medical Informatics has become one of the newest specialties in healthcare, especially with the age of EHRs. With this has come a whole new set of advantages and disadvantages to the healthcare record system. So then, what are the comparisons and constraints between EHRs and paper charts?

   First, let’s look at some of the advantages of both. EHRs have many advantages, such as; efficiency with information being shared almost immediately, prevention of medication errors through pharmacy controls looking for the possibility for interactions of medications, cost saving measures through the flagging of duplicate test ordering and space saving, as EHRs take up much less space than other forms (Anna, 2012). Paper charting also has its advantages, such as; cost savings of not paying for a new expensive system, hackers are not able to infiltrate paper charting from a distance, not alienating staff with learning a new system that may be difficult to learn, and not paper charting not being threatened by power outages or virus programs.

   So, now let’s talk about the disadvantages of both of these records keeping. While looking at the HER system, some of the disadvantages are; expenses related to adopting this system, privacy concerns related to hacking and who can access these records, the complexity of learning to use such a complex system can be daunting to some stakeholders, and compliance issues which the facility will need to ensure that laws and regulations are being followed (Schorsch, 2014). With paper records, there are also disadvantages, such as; space as storing these records will need to be considered, lost paperwork cannot be replaced especially if it is older records, sharing information and test results can be delayed due to physical location, and there may be wasteful spending if duplicate tests are ordered because records could not be obtained in a timely fashion (Dean, 2013).

   As you can see, both EHRs and hard copy records both have their advantages and disadvantages. With the passage of the HIPAA law and the HITECH law, EHR systems whether deemed advantageous or disadvantageous are now being mandated with monetary incentives to help facilities big and small to implement this system (Hecker and Edwards, 2014). Facilities will need to assess their current constructs to analyze potential hazards to the implementation, and highlight advantages to stakeholders. This will allow the transition to be smooth if the stakeholders are prepared for what is to come and have buy-in for the process.

 was introduced in 2004 electronic patient records when I worked at doctor’s office and working in the healthcare field over 15 years, I was glad that paper files were packed away and shredded and replaced by electronically. In 2009 the government along with Health Information Technology Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) to hospital and other medical facilities to start the electronic health records and electronic medical records. Changing over to electronically medical record is secure and protects patient’s information. There are many advantages of electronic patient records

·          Securely sharing electronic information with patients and other medical facilities

·          Help provider with patient care and reduces error

·          Reduces cost from paperwork, improve safety, no duplication of tests and improved health records

·          Protect patient’s personal information and insurance, also credit card information

·          Quick access to patient’s records

There are some disadvantages using electronic patient records.

·          Computer can crash and wipe out all the patient information

·          Identity theft can happen to unauthorized user of patient’s information

·          From the computer crashing, the patient’s information might not have been backed up on the cloud and this information cannot be recovered.

·          Updating the medical record can be costly

Using hard copy can be a plus when the computer crashes you will still have the option to recover because the hard copies are stored away for use in case this problem occurs. Then you have older patients that prefer their medical information to be hard copy instead of electronically. There are many pros and cons for electronic patient records but have them electronically is beneficial to hospitals, doctor’s office and other medical facilities because of the convenience of protecting patient’s information and have firewalls to protect from viruses and computer hackers.
